Harriet Tubman Day

March 10th is  “Harriet Tubman Day.”  Tubman was an abolitionist.  This means that she worked to get rid of slavery.  She helped many slaves escape to freedom on the Underground Railroad.  Using resources in the classroom and the Internet, learn five (5) facts about Harriet Tubman and/or the Underground Railroad and summarize them in your own words.

    1) She was a conductor on the Underground Railroad.
    2) She helped over 100,000 slaves escape to Freedom over her lifetime. (19 trips and 300 slaves)
    3) She was born in 1820 or 1821 in Maryland.
    4) In 1857 she lead her parents to freedom.
    5) She worked for the Union army as a spy and scout.

    3: If a slave tried turn back on the to the north, she threatened to shoot them.

    3. She stayed in a pigpen for five days because she ate some of her master’s sugar and she was going to get whipped.

    4. Harriet’s owner had died so she had to have a new owner.

    5. Harriet had a scar on her head because the overseer threw a weight at a runaway slave, but it hit Harriet instead.

    It sounds like Harriet Tubman was a real hero and she worked in the army! If I were in the army I’d be hiding in the corner eating donats.Harriet Tubman sounds like a cool and brave person.

    Harriet Tubman was brave. Harriet Tubman’s real name was Minty. Tubman’s mommy’s real name was Harriet. Tubman’s daddy’s name was Ben. Harriet was a nurse, spy and cook in the Civil War.

    1. She helped over 300 slaves escape and she never lost one single passenger (a slave who is escaping).

    2. She helped a slave escape and the overseer (a person who doesn’t let slaves escape) throw a brick at her. Instead of hitting the slave, it hit Harriet because he missed the slave.

    3. She was a nurse in the army and made root beer and snacks at night for the Union men.

    4. She lead people in the Union army to take down a path that the south needed.

    5. She was born in 1820 and died in 1913 in Auburn, New York.

    6. She was chosen to replace mean old Andrew Jackson on the 20 dollar bill. She will be on there in 2018.
